Among Friends

THE AWARD

Among Friends, Chan Ka Nin’s clarinet trio, was the 1994 recipient of the Juno Award for “Best Classical Composition” as well as the 1991 Barlow International Chamber Music Competition. Chan also received a Juno in 2002 for his work Par-ci, par-là.

THE WORK

Written in 1989, Among Friends was originally composed for the Chan’s colleagues at the University of Toronto, the Amici Chamber Ensemble, whose name inspired the title and the spirit of the work.

Chan has commented on this work: “Chamber music is usually played ‘among friends’. In many ways, the musical relationship in a composition is similar to friendship: first there is the encounter of different individualistic personalities, then followed by interaction, conflict, and resolution. This scenario is reflected musically by a set of theme and variations based on the initial notes F-Bflat-Aflat. Friendship, like music, will last only through the test of time.”
